A developing African country known for its wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, Kenya straddles the equator and shares boundaries with Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda and Tanzania. The Indian Ocean stretches out from Kenya’s east coast. From the flat-topped acacia trees of the southern plains to the high slopes of Mt. Kenya, this nation is notable for its geographical, natural, and cultural variety. For many people, Kenya means a game safari on the savannah. But Kenya also means the Great Rift Valley—one of the wonders of the world—as well as hundreds of miles of clean, sandy, palm-fringed coral beaches.
More than 40 million people live in Kenya, a nation slightly smaller in area than the state of Texas, but they face various perils. The average life expectancy in Kenya is only about 47 years; more than 15% of the population lives with HIV/AIDS. Half of the people live below the poverty level and 40% are unemployed. On the brighter side, Kenya offers religious freedom and 78% of the population calls themselves Christians; there are nearly as many evangelicals in Kenya (about 13 million) as there are in all of Europe combined.
Nestled in the highlands of southern part of the country is the capital city of Nairobi. Nairobi is Kenya’s principal economic, administrative, and cultural center, as well as one of the largest and fastest growing cities on the continent. Located in an area once frequented by the pastoral Maisa people, Nairobi was founded in the late 1890s as a British camp along the Mombasa-to-Uganda railroad. In 1905 it became the swampy tent city capital of the British East Africa Protectorate (known as Kenya Colony from 1920-1963). In 1963 Nairobi and its outlying areas became the capital of independent Kenya after the nation’s ties to the British were severed. Today Nairobi is a colorful city of crowded markets and trading areas as well as middle class suburbs.
